Jean Bondroit (1882-1952)
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Belgian artist and entomologist. Bondroit, who unhappily was a most unconventional and uncompromising personality ready to support his theories at scientific meetings with the revolver which it has been said he habitually carried in his pocket, seems to have collapsed under the treatment his work received and to have retired into the oblivion which his critics desired. For all its faults, Bondroit's work was a distinct advance in ant taxonomy for it showed, in the rufa group at any rate, where characters other than colour and pilosity could be found, particularly in the until then almost ignored female caste.
